Israel’s military has declared two primary goals in the Gaza Strip: to destroy Hamas’s ability to govern and launch attacks from Gaza, and to return the hostages held there by Hamas and other armed groups. At present, Hamas has largely lost control of the northern Gaza Strip, but it retains a presence in southern Gaza, and is still holding over 100 hostages. In the meantime, the widespread destruction and death toll, now in the tens of thousands, has garnered Israel unprecedented international opprobrium.
On January 24, the Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings hosted a virtual panel to discuss Israel’s strategy and its security and political ramifications going forward.
