On October 24, the Development Assistance and Governance Initiative at Brookings, Oxfam America and Publish What You Fund launched Publish What You Fund’s 2013 Aid Transparency Index (ATI), which is currently the only global measure of the state of aid transparency in the world’s leading aid organizations. This discussion focused on the challenges that agencies face when publishing their aid information, and highlighting the advances made to open up aid. It is also explored the use of the data and what agencies do to encourage people to access aid information.
The International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) was launched just over five years ago to make information about aid spending easier to access, understand and use. IATI has garnered progress in publishing aid information, but its implementation needs to be sped up to meet vocal development demand from developing country governments and their citizens, as well as from civil society advocates around the world. The Publish What You Fund’s 2013 ATI launch focuses not only on donors’ progress of aid transparency, but also on the usability and accessibility of the data by all stakeholders.
